[Frey] Newcomer

Usually, when a new student came to the school, the teacher in charge of welcoming them was meant to wait for them by the main gate, outside. However Lyne had decided to delegate this part; she'd asked one of her young human students to "go get the new person and bring him here please!", As it was a very sunny, bright day outside. Given her jellyfish like nature, she wasn't too keen on standing out in the open for what could likely be a long amount of time; the sun made her skin dry in very unpleasant, painful ways, even when her lower half was still in her wheeled tub.

So in the end she simply waited just inside the main hall by the door, enjoying a nice book on alchemical components and their link to symbols and how these symbols related to philosophy (it was a bit of an odd academical book), glancing up whenever someone slid in through the half opened, big door.

She had heard interesting things on the student, which explained why she'd volunteered. He was much older than their usual newcomers, and he was a hybrid. That made him very peculiar as they rarely ever joined the academy, and often only did so coming in as young children or orphans brought to them. Her curious nature made her want to ask him many questions. It was a bit of a big event for those in the know and she expected him to gather a lot of attention in his firsts days here; at least until the novelty wore off.

Finally. His school debut was now! Ugh, it made him very, really nervous. Not just because he will start studying for real, but he will start communicate with other living creatures beside his family. And when he was just about to take a deep breath to calm himself down, another student approached him and made him jolted. He didn't expect to talk to another student, a human, so early like this since usually the teacher was the one who was supposed to take care of a new student. ... Right? well, that was what the guide said. But he agreed to follow the student to enter the main hall since he said the teacher sent him to get Frey.

Once he entered the hall, he didn't look at his teacher and stared at the place instead. God, this place was huge. Their family food storage was big. But this place made the storage look like a closet. And when he felt satisfied enough, he finally looked around to search for his teacher. It only need a few seconds until he finally found his teacher. Well, the student from earlier told him about her after all. He walked to her and only stared at her for a while before making a small, awkward bow and a whisper voice which saying "good morning". Hope she heard his small, husky voice. Yes, his voice was quite husky eventhough he had a very girly face.

Wait was he ignoring her? She didn't really like that but well, if that was what he wanted, she did have a fascinating book... Which she turned her attention back to until he was willing to talk to her. After all the school was pretty nice, and she supposed it was fair he'd need a bit of time to take it in.
She did take quick glances at him still, kind of interested in his general way of being; she was aware he was a man but he looked adorable still; she rarely found men cute at all, so it was a bit of a surprise to her.

Oh dear the young man really would have to work on his voice, that wouldn't do once in class. Thankfully now was a time when most of the other students were in class or dorms, so there wasn't too much noise around and she could hear him, but still.
"You'll have to speak up a little now you're here. Good morning."
That said she decided against teasing the poor dude too much; he may not be a child anymore unlike most of the students here but he may still be sensitive. It looked like he wasn't socialised enough with his somewhat awkward behavior of staring and whispering.

She shifted a little her wheeled tub, carefully putting her book on top of said tub's leather cover, before rolling herself toward another door.
"Right, follow me for a small tour, if you have any questions ask away. We can get your school supplies and lead you to your dorm afterward."

Usually it was a little nicer but he was older right? He didn't need coddling like kids leaving their family house for the first time.

Speak up? no. Even if his own teacher said that, it's still a bit too hard for him to do it since he wasn't used to talk to stranger. Well, he need to try though. He will start living at a place full of stranger afterall. So, he gave her a nod for it.

Frey looked at the wheeled tub as his teacher moved. It's the first time he sees something like that, what a very convenience device. His teacher could move everywhere while still getting comfy in the water. She was.. used to live in the water right? He didn't really know how other species live so.. God, he need to study hard about the world. But for now, he should just follow her and let her showed him around the place.
"tha-thank you.."
He mumbled a bit and shut his mouth again after that. He really didn't like to talk. No. Actually, it's more like.. he didn't know how to start a conversation with other. No, wait, he actually had a question for her.
"i-is there.. another.. hybrid here?" Since if there were, it'll be nice if he could meet them.

Well at least he tried, even if he still mumbled... She held back a small sigh as she pushed herself more in the main hall, about to start her explanations when he finally spoke up to ask a question. An interesting question too; it was true they were not a very common thing yet... She thought a little about it.
"We had a child one a while ago but he left to go back to his family. Right now you're the only one around I'm afraid."

The jellyfish had to think about the deeper meaning to this question, since she felt it was her duty as a teacher. She clearly remembered her first days in the academy, and how no matter how nice the teachers were it still felt odd since it wasn't like home and there weren't any other merfolks around at the time. Most of them were perfectly happy in the ocean or rivers around after all.

"It might feel odd and lonely at first being the only one around but you get used to it, and it doesn't last since we often have new students joining us. There might be more like you soon. If not,you could try to be like me so more feel like joining in the future."

She did make it so more merfolks attended after all, in specialised submerged classes even. Once done trying to comfort him a bit she gestured around the main hall some.
"This is where you'll come to enjoy breaks or eat; you can talk to friends or do extra work here."
She then pointed out the way to the dorms, where to go if he had certain needs, the way out to the gardens, all that while rolling more toward the exit.

Oh no. He will be all alone. Well, he never really talk to another hybrid but.. His family said that the other species felt superior to the hybrid so he thought it will be kind of difficult to talk to other.

And joining in the future? What did she mean like that? It did comfort him a bit for having a hope that another hybrid might joining soon but he still didn't say anything on that. Not even a thank for explaining.

He kept following Lyne while staring at her tub. Wondering the way it could roll and bring her everywhere. He also tried to remember all of her explaining about the place so he won't lost and felt the need to ask someone for direction.

"Umm.. You mentioned a.. Extra work.. What.. Do you mean by that?"
Was it some kind of part time job? If yes, he will be interested on it.

It admittedly was kind of unpleasant to give a tour to such a silent person; usually people at least nodded or made small noises to show they listened but no, he seemed intent on staring at her moving aid instead. Not even looking at the buildings or anything it seemed, which made the whole tour pointless.

When he finally asked a question she stopped and shifted a bit to look at him better.
"When you're really interested in a subject and want to deepen your knowledge of it, or when you're struggling with understanding classwork and need more time to study things, you can ask for extra classwork to do on your own. Sometimes teachers may also give you assignments, but it's rare."

Once she was done explaining that she scowled a little his way.
"Should we start the tour over maybe, so you can focus on the actual buildings? It's rude to stare."

Oh no, he stared too much. He quickly averted his eyes and looked at his own foot instead.
"I-I'm really sorry.. I didn't mean to.."

this is bad. Very bad. He was planning to stay out of trouble at the school until he graduated. But he had failed, he made his teacher upset at his first day. Now now, what should he do?
"I.. It's just.. Your.. Um.. De-device.. I never.. See it.. Before.." it was his honest reason. Well, he lived at the farm which was so, so far away from a village so he didn't really know what kind of technology they used here. Also, he always helped his father to make some tools to help their daily activity so.. That moving tub kind of interest him. He wanted to know how it works and also how to make one. Maybe he could modify it and use it for farming purpose? Who knows right?

Well at least now he was talking a little, and proving he could be somewhat polite since he was apologising. Would it be good enough? She supposed it had to, she couldn't stay mad at her students because of such a small offense.

She looked at him with a small sigh before folding her arms on the cover of her tub, looking less annoyed now.

"Of course you never saw it before. I'm the only one of my kind dumb enough to try to actually live on land."

Or brave enough, it depended on the perspective. Still she was the only one she knew of having it since it had been custom created and made by her and for her with a bit of help.

"I can't exactly walk and this helps me get around, plus it's good to protect students from my deadly bits."
Well to be fair just one tentacle would burn and hurt, it only got deadly when you got entangled in them.

"deadly?" his face turned a bit pale. Really? She could kill someone with only her tentacle? That's.. Scary.. And cool. But scary at the same time.

So she was almost same as him. She left her home to join the academy even if it meant that she had to live on the land and had to use the aid so she could walk around. For Frey, it was hard to leave his safe zone and come here. But he had not difficulty to live on the land so he actually didn't struggle much. His teacher on the other side, kept coming here to join the academy and moreover, become a teacher. That was..
".. So cool.. You are so brave.. Umm.." what was her name again?

Oh right, maybe it wasn't a good idea to scare her new students on their first day... But then again it was also better they knew early on so they didn't try odd stuff. One student stuck his hand in her tub once to joke or something and ended up having scars on that hand that were pretty bothersome to him. So preventing problems early on by scaring them a bit was the best idea.

"I'm a jellyfish. We merfolks are mostly carnivorous, and use various ways to catch preys; in my kind's case, we use tentacles to stun our food and eat them once the venom killed them. So yes, deadly if you're dumb and try to join me in there. I'm fine with simple fish, beef or pork meals myself, so don't worry I won't go hunting my students."

She patted her wheeltub as she spoke, giving him a bit of a smile. She didn't feel like eating him at all- studying him, sure, but she was satisfied with meals that didn't involve human like creatures. It was usual for her to explain the bits on how her kind worked since people tended to be a bit curious- kids asked a lot of questions. Compliments were always nice though.

"Thank you. Any other questions before we go on?"

Frey looked around a bit. Making sure if there is something that he need to ask his teacher before she left.
"oh, when can I.. Start my class?"

he might be shy, didn't like to talk too much, stuttered a lot when he speak and almost never look at the person he talked to in the eyes. But, he was brave enough to come here for study so.. He couldn't wait to do the main reason he came this far. To study. Oh, but he might have to learn to write and read first before he came to actual class.

"a-actually.. I.. I'm not good with writing and reading.. So.. Maybe not starting a class.. Whe-when can I start the.. Extra lesson?" he edited his question to the teacher in front of him. Still not looking at her though.

Those were admittedly very valid questions she should answer; usually once the small tour was done she did have to work out a schedule with them, though he did prove complicated given how old he was and his lack of knowledge. Not that it was a huge hurdle; it happened once in a while.

"We have classes dedicated to learning to write and read, so it's all part of the curriculum; granted most of the students also are little kids so if you feel uncomfortable with that we can try to organise it so you can get private tutoring. Also I'd appreciate if you looked at me when you spoke."

If she was going to be in charge of him and end up tutoring him she sure as hell was going to teach him some manners.

Private tutoring. That sounds good since he didn't really like being around lots of people. Well, he will face it someday since he needed to attend a normal class soon. But for now, maybe he should just take the private tutoring so he could study without worrying about lots of people around him or the fact that he was too old to take readin and writing class.

"umm.. Please.. Please let me take the private tutoring.." he answered and also trying his best to look at Lyne when he did it. He quickly averted his eyes after that though. But he will try to look at her again when she talk later.
